Is There a Maid of the Mist on the Canadian Side?

Aug 12, 2026 | Excursions

No. There is no Maid of the Mist Canada side dock to find. The boats board in the lower gorge at Prospect Point, inside Niagara Falls State Park in Niagara Falls, New York, and the company’s own Maid of the Mist FAQ says it plainly: you depart from and return to the American side of the border. If you are standing on the Canada side looking for that boat, the one you will actually find is Niagara City Cruises, the official boat tour operator for Niagara Parks, boarding at 5920 Niagara Parkway. Two companies, two countries, two different boats.

The confusion is fair. Both boats leave from the same stretch of river, both hand you a poncho, and both finish in the spray at the base of the Horseshoe. From a hotel window on either shore they look like the same operation. They are not, and if you have your heart set on one specific boat, it decides which side of the border your morning starts on.

The short answer, and what it means for your day

If someone told you to take the Maid of the Mist, you need to be in New York State. Not near the border, not looking at the falls from the Canada side. In the park, at Prospect Point, in line. There is no Maid of the Mist Canada side departure to switch to.

That has knock-on effects worth knowing before you book a hotel:

  • Staying on the Canadian side and want the Maid of the Mist? You will cross the Rainbow Bridge and back, which means passports for everyone in your group. We cover the document rules in detail in our guide to visiting Niagara Falls without a passport.
  • Staying on the American side and happy with any boat? Take the Maid of the Mist. It is a short walk from much of downtown Niagara Falls, NY.
  • Want both boats in one day? Possible, but it is a long day and two border crossings. More on that below.

Maid of the Mist vs Niagara City Cruises

Here is what actually differs, stripped of the marketing.

One naming note. Older guidebooks still call the Canada side boat Hornblower, the name Niagara Parks kept in the web address linked above. The boat you board there is branded Niagara City Cruises.

The route is the honest answer to “which is better”. Both boats push up past the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls and finish nose-in at the base of the Horseshoe. You get soaked on both. The falls do not care which flag is on the stern.

What the two boats cost

Prices below are the published rates from each operator’s official listing at the time of writing. Both change by season, so check the operator, or the price posted at the ticket office on the day, before you budget.

TicketMaid of the Mist (USD)Niagara City Cruises (CAD, before 13% HST)
Adult$30.25$47.95 (13 and over)
Child$19.75 (ages 6 to 12)$32.95 (ages 3 to 12)
Youngest5 and under free with a paid adult2 and under free

Two things people miss. First, the Canadian price is quoted before 13% HST, so the number at checkout is higher than the number on the page. Second, the currencies are different, and the gap between the two boats narrows or widens with the exchange rate on the day you go. Run the conversion yourself rather than assuming one is the cheap option.

If you are booking for more than a handful of people, ask each operator about group rates before you purchase tickets one at a time. And note what buying ahead does not do: tickets purchased in advance for the Maid of the Mist do not hold a time, because the boat does not sell one. Group leaders who would rather hand the whole two-sided day to one local team can use our receptive services, and the group tour planning guide covers border documents and coach parking.

Neither price includes parking. New York State Parks publishes the Niagara Falls State Park rates by season: $10.00 daily from March 1 to May 26, then $10.00 Monday to Thursday and $15.00 Friday to Sunday through October 9, then $10.00 daily again. Walking into the park is always free.

Which one should you take?

Take the Maid of the Mist if

  • You are already staying on the American side, or you do not want to deal with a border crossing.
  • You are travelling with someone without a passport.
  • You want the name. It has been running since 1846 and for a lot of visitors that history is the point.
  • You care about the electric boats. Maid of the Mist put two fully electric vessels into service in 2020, described by the company as the first emission-free vessels of their kind in the United States.

Take Niagara City Cruises if

  • You are staying in Ontario and crossing the bridge twice sounds like a waste of a morning.
  • You want the Canadian-side attractions in the same walk. Journey Behind the Falls and the Clifton Hill strip are right there.
  • You are booking through Niagara Parks anyway and want everything on one ticket.

Can you do both in one day?

Yes, and people do. It means two Rainbow Bridge crossings, two ticket queues, and two short boat rides out of a full day. If the goal is to see the falls properly rather than to collect boats, most visitors get more out of pairing one boat with a land attraction on each side: Cave of the Winds and its elevator down into the gorge on the American side, Journey Behind the Falls on the Canadian.

That combination is exactly what our Canadian and American tour with the Maid of the Mist boat ride is built around, and the guide handles the border paperwork and the parking so you are not doing it twice in a rental car.

What the Maid of the Mist ride is actually like

Twenty minutes, according to the operator. You queue, you take a poncho, you go down to the landing, you board the next boat. There are no timed tickets, which is what people are really after when they search for online tickets. Maid of the Mist tells visitors to simply join the line on arrival and board the next available boat on a first come, first served basis, which is why the queue is the variable and not the schedule.

The first half is calm. You pass the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls close enough to see individual rocks in the talus pile at the bottom. Then the boat turns into the Horseshoe and the noise arrives before the water does. The poncho keeps your torso dry and nothing else. Phones get wet. Glasses are useless for about four minutes. Dress for the weather conditions on the day, not for the month; the spray is the same either way, but how cold it feels is not.

Best time to be in line is the first boat of the day or the last two hours before closing. Midday in July, the queue at Prospect Point is the longest queue on the American side. Check the published schedule for the first and last scheduled departure on the date you are going.

Maid of the Mist boat tours run a season, not a year-round timetable. The 2026 season runs from late April into early November. Dates shift year to year, so check the operator’s published schedule rather than a third-party page before you plan around it. Our full Maid of the Mist guide goes deeper on timing, queues and what to wear.

Getting to the dock

The Maid of the Mist landing sits in the lower gorge at Prospect Point, inside Niagara Falls State Park. The closest parking is Lot 1 at 333 Prospect Street; the Goat Island lots also work and are usually quieter in peak season.

If you are crossing from the Canada side on foot, the Rainbow Bridge pedestrian toll is $1.00 in US cash US-bound. Vehicle tolls are collected one way into Canada. Both figures come from the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission and were last revised in May 2025.

If you would rather not park, queue or cross a border on your own, our All American Tour stays on the New York side and includes the boat, and the Royal Canadian Tour handles the crossing for you.
