Electric Maid of the Mist Boat

Nov 30, 2022 | What's Going on in Niagara Falls

The iconic “Maid of the Mist” diesel engine boats have been allowing visitors to experience the wonder of one of North America’s crowning jewels, Niagara Falls, for over 175 years. But in 2020, the world-famous boat ride entered a new era of sustainability with the introduction of two new electric boats.

Going Beyond Improving the View

The choice to replace the diesel engine boats with electric boats went beyond improving the view for passengers. The new “Maid of the Mist” vessels help protect the waters and beauty of the Niagara River and gorge while taking steps towards building a safer environment. The new electric boat ride is a zero-emission operation since all the boats’ power is supplied by the nearby Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, one of the most productive hydroelectric facilities in the United States.

A Boat Unlike Any Other

Maid of the Mist BoatThe state-of-the-art electric double decker boats making up the small “Maid of the Mist” fleet are powered by two 3,000-pound lithium-ion battery banks that are recharged at the dock for seven minutes between runs.

Each boat has four cone-shaped propellers and two arcade reminiscent joysticks to steer the boat in any direction and even spin in place, giving the 1.6 million average yearly passengers a panoramic view of the Falls gorge during their electric boat ride.

Gone is the loud hum of the old diesel engines and obstructed views from the fume-spewing exhaust stacks of the former boats. According to “Over the Falls Tours” owner Chris Glynn, the tour company that owns the boats, “The ride is smooth. There’s virtually no noise other than nature itself and the sound of the Falls. It’s almost like a sailing experience.”
